Indications have since expanded to include gastric bypasses, gall bladder removals and thyroid cancer surgeries. Of particular concern, however, are reports that these devices may cause serious injuries. Therefore, patients may be at risk of experiencing a variety of complications that range from sepsis to death. Da Vinci Robot Lawsuit Overview

The da Vinci Robot, otherwise known as the da Vinci Surgical System was immediately indicated by the appropriate regulatory authorities to assist healthcare practitioners in minimally invasive abdominal procedures. As such, this medical device has provided treatment for thousands of patients needing hysterectomies and prostatectomies around the country, and is increasingly being used to perform other procedures; including gastric bypasses, gall bladder removals and thyroid cancer surgeries. Mechanical arms allow surgeons to preform tasks that they were previously unable to while simultaneously reducing healing times. Unfortunately, these devices may become the center of a large da Vinci Robot lawsuit.

Of particular concern, however, are reports that suggest the use of the da Vinci Surgical System may not provide additional advantages over existing minimally invasive alternatives. According to The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), adding this expensive technology for routine surgical care does not improve patient outcomes. Regulatory officials have acknowledged that there is a steep learning curve associated with new surgical technologies, during which there is an increased complication rate. Therefore, recipients of robotic surgery may be at an increased risk of experiencing significant damage. Injuries sustained from such procedures have been reported to include cuff dehiscence, bladder injuries, ureter damage, the need for painful revision surgeries, and death.

Da Vinci Surgical System Complications

Da Vinci Robot lawsuits are currently evaluating the link between these surgical devices and the following complications:

  • Surgical burns to respective arteries and organs
  • Peritonitis (painful and/or tender inflammation of the lining of the abdomen)
  • Sepsis
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Punctured blood vessels, organs and arteries
  • Burning or lacerations within the intestines
  • Severe bowel injuries
  • Punctured or lacerated uterus
  • Vaginal cuff dehiscence (reopening of the incision made to remove the uterus and cervix during a hysterectomy)
  • Additional revision surgery
  • Fistulas
  • Wrongful death
